LIES, DAMNED LIES AND THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA – DON’T BE FOOLED

“It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled” (Mark Twain) Not for the first time I reached for my Mark Twain book of quotes while I considered the thrust of what I wanted to convey in this column. The truth is what I want to say justifies a book or two rather than a single opinion piece and many others have explained the reality of the issue I want to rage about better than me. From John Pilger to Noam Chomsky, Robert Fisk to Seymour Hersh I implore those of you interested in the […]

Universal Credit is a Scandal of Criminal Proportions – Iain Duncan Smith Should be Prosecuted

Yesterday in the den of dishonesty and inequity which serves us the British seat of democracy a Tory Minister almost caused the roof to cave in. Against all the guidelines and memos on Ministerial behaviour from the Civil Service high heid yins Amber Rudd in Parliament was forced to utter words of truth in response to consistent questioning and pressure from opposition MP’s to admit that the disastrous Universal Credit scheme has caused massive increases in the use of food banks among the victims of the Universal Credit rollout. After a year of deceitful and dishonest denials from previous […]

Whose Side Are You On – Trump or Maduro? Darkness or Democracy?

Politics is about taking sides. Those who seek to sit on fences in the midst of important political struggles and events end up with nothing more than cowardly reputations and very sore arses. In respect of the current Trump inspired and organised attempted coup de’etat in Venezuela it is illegal under international law, illegitimate under any democratic measure and immoral politically. Trump represents darkness. Maduro represents democracy. Venezuela is a democratic country with a highly motivated electorate empowered by the Chavista movement from 1998 against the powerful and very rich elites in Venezuela who for several decades had ran […]

The Victims of Crime Deserve Justice – It Is Not About Left or Right but Right and Wrong

I detest ‘trial by tabloid’ and ‘pitchfork justice’ which is inevitably ill-informed, illegitimate and ignorant of the law and the details of cases and/or incidents. I used to consider Gerry Conlon of the Guildford Four a friend until his premature death from lung cancer in June 2014. He spoke up for me against my treatment by the press, media and judicial system. We shared several platforms in campaigns to highlight miscarriages of justice. Gerry was wrongly convicted of being an IRA bomber and served 15 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. The Judge at his trial, Justice […]

GLASGOW’S BLOODY FRIDAY – Brutal Attack on Defenceless Strikers

“Henceforth January 31, 1919, will be known in Glasgow as Bloody Friday, and, for the crime of attacking defenceless workers, the citizens will hold the authorities responsible. The police have once more been used as hirelings to bludgeon the workers. The workers will not forget.” The words above constitute the first paragraph of the Strike Bulletin produced by the ’40 HOURS MOVEMENT’ on February 1st 1919. Exactly 100 years ago today in Glasgow police officers were ordered to draw their batons and launch a ferocious assault on thousands of workers assembled peacefully in George Square in the centre of Glasgow. […]
